Candice Tang, a high school student from California

At the age of 12, I saw my father cry for the first time. It was the moment he learned my grandfather had liver cancer. My father, who had chosen to accompany me to the U.S., couldn't be by his father's side during his final moments in China. This painful experience opened my eyes to the harsh reality of illnesses and the critical role healthcare plays as the bridge between life and death. I realized then that healthcare impacts not only the lives of patients but also the well-being of entire families.

While shadowing an oncology physician at the renowned City of Hope hospital, I learned about numerous advanced clinical trials for cancer patients and the dedication and enthusiasm of the physicians. I couldn't help but wonder if my grandfather might have held on longer to see my father one last time had he had access to such advanced healthcare.

While shadowing the physician, I also noticed that many patients traveled 4-5 hours from remote areas, staying in hotels to receive treatment at City of Hope. This exposure reinforced my belief that quality healthcare should be a universal right, and accessible to everyone in need, regardless of their backgrounds.
